Job Overview

The Advanced Specialist Pharmacist ED/AMU role at Galway University Hospitals offers an exciting opportunity to lead and enhance clinical pharmacy services within the Emergency Department (ED) and Acute Medical Unit (AMU). This permanent HSE position plays a vital role in optimising medicines management, improving patient safety, and supporting multidisciplinary care delivery in a fast-paced acute setting.

This post is open to both HSE and non-HSE applicants and forms part of HSE West and North West services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced clinical pharmacy services within the Emergency Department and Acute Medical Unit.
  • Lead and support medicines optimisation initiatives to enhance patient safety and care outcomes.
  • Collaborate closely with medical, nursing, and allied health professionals in acute care settings.
  • Review and reconcile medications for complex and high-risk patients.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate medicine-related improvement projects to improve service delivery.
  • Provide specialist advice on pharmacotherapy, antimicrobial stewardship, and high-risk medications.
  • Support education and training initiatives for pharmacy and healthcare staff.
  • Ensure compliance with national guidelines, policies, and HSE governance frameworks.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Registration as a Pharmacist with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI).
  • Significant post-qualification experience within Emergency Department and/or Acute Medical Unit settings.
  • Demonstrated depth and breadth of experience in managing medicine-related improvement projects.
  • Strong clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and leadership skills.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and service improvement.
