Galway University Hospitals are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Assistant Director of Nursing for Quality Improvement and Dementia to lead service excellence initiatives across acute services. Job Overview
The Assistant Director of Nursing for Quality Improvement and Dementia will support the Interim Chief Director of Nursing & Midwifery in delivering high-quality, safe, person-centred services. The post holder will be based in Galway University Hospitals and must be available onsite a minimum of two days per week.
A panel may be formed from this campaign to fill current and future permanent or specified purpose vacancies (full or part-time).
Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate quality improvement initiatives across clinical services.
- Drive the implementation of national dementia care standards and best practices.
- Support clinical governance, risk management, and patient safety frameworks.
- Monitor and evaluate quality indicators, audits, and service performance metrics.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to improve patient pathways.
- Provide professional leadership and support to nursing teams.
- Contribute to strategic planning within HSE West and North West.
- Ensure compliance with national healthcare regulations and policies.
Requirements
- Registered General Nurse on the live register maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
- Significant senior-level nursing management experience.
- Demonstrated experience in quality improvement and clinical governance.
- Experience in dementia care service development and implementation.
- Proven leadership, communication, and change management skills.
- Postgraduate qualification relevant to nursing management or healthcare leadership (desirable).
Salary & Benefits
Salary is aligned with the Assistant Director of Nursing (Band 1 Hospitals), Grade Code 2910 pay scale under the Department of Health Consolidated Salary Scales (effective 1 August 2025) .
Salary Scale (1 August 2025): €71,408 – €88,123 (9-point scale, LSIs applicable)

Location & Employer Information
The role is based at Galway University Hospitals, part of HSE West and North West, serving the counties of Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo, and Galway.
The post holder will work closely with the Interim Chief Director of Nursing & Midwifery and multidisciplinary leadership teams to enhance patient outcomes and dementia care standards across the hospital group.
