Galway University Hospitals (GUH), part of HSE West and North West, is seeking a Bereavement Liaison Officer (Grade VII) to join its management and administration team. This internal HSE post plays a key role in providing compassionate coordination and support for bereavement services across the hospital group.

About the Role

The Bereavement Liaison Officer will be responsible for developing and managing bereavement support processes within Galway University Hospitals. This role requires a strong administrative background, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to liaise effectively between clinical, pastoral, and administrative teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and oversee bereavement care services across the hospital network.
  • Provide guidance and support to staff, patients’ families, and next of kin during the bereavement process.
  • Develop and implement bereavement policies in line with HSE standards.
  • Liaise with clinical directors, nursing management, and pastoral care teams.
  • Maintain detailed records and ensure compliance with data protection and confidentiality requirements.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives for bereavement support services.
  • Represent the hospital in relevant internal and external forums or networks.

Required Qualifications

Essential

  • Employment within the HSE, TUSLA, Section 38 agency, or statutory health agency (as per WRC Agreement 161867).
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise effectively across professional and administrative groups.
  • Significant post-registration experience relevant to bereavement or healthcare liaison roles.
  • Excellent communication, empathy, and organizational skills.

Preferred

  • Qualification in Healthcare Management, Social Work, Psychology, or a related discipline.
  • Experience developing hospital policies or managing sensitive service areas.
  • Knowledge of bereavement support frameworks within the Irish healthcare system.

What We Offer

  • Grade VII (Code 0582) salary scale per HSE Consolidated Pay Scales (effective 1 March 2025):
    €59,587 – €74,983 per annum (including LSIs).
