Job Overview
The Clinical Nurse Specialist Portlaoise position offers an exciting opportunity to work within Obstetric Ultrasound and Gynaecology services at Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise. This permanent wholetime post supports the delivery of specialist, evidence-based care within a progressive maternity setting.
This role is open to employees of the HSE, TUSLA, Section 38 agencies, or statutory health agencies in line with WRC Agreement 161867. The successful candidate will contribute to high standards of patient care, clinical leadership, and service development within the HSE Dublin and Midlands region.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist nursing and midwifery expertise in Obstetric Ultrasound and Gynaecology services.
- Deliver advanced clinical assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care.
- Support the development and implementation of evidence-based clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to enhance patient outcomes.
- Participate in audit, quality improvement initiatives, and service development projects.
- Provide education, mentorship, and professional support to nursing and midwifery colleagues.
- Maintain accurate documentation and uphold HSE clinical governance standards.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Registered Nurse or Midwife with active registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
- Demonstrated depth and breadth of Nursing/Midwifery experience in the specialist area of Obstetric Ultrasound and Gynaecology.
- Eligibility for or current enrolment on the Interim ONMS Clinical Nurse Specialist / Clinical Midwife Specialist database.
- Have undertaken or agree to undertake the Nurse Prescribing of Medicinal Products Certificate within an agreed timeframe.
- Have undertaken or agree to undertake the Nurse Prescribing of Ionising Radiation Certificate within an agreed timeframe.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and service excellence.
Salary, Benefits & Working Hours
- Grade: Clinical Nurse Specialist Candidate (General) – Grade Code 2697.
- Salary: In line with February 2026 HSE consolidated pay scales for Clinical Nurse Specialist Candidate (Nursing & Midwifery Grades), commencing from €71,432 per annum (Point 1), subject to experience and public sector pay policy.
- Contract Type: Permanent Wholetime.

Location & Employer Information
This role is based at Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise, County Laois, within the HSE Dublin and Midlands health region. The hospital provides acute and maternity services to the surrounding communities and forms part of a wider integrated health network.
