Cork University Hospital is seeking a dedicated Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our Care of the Older Person team. This permanent wholetime position offers the opportunity to provide specialist nursing care and leadership in geriatric healthcare at one of Ireland’s leading teaching hospitals.
About the Role
As a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Care of the Older Person, you will deliver expert clinical care to elderly patients at Cork University Hospital in Wilton, Cork. This permanent position requires specialized knowledge in gerontological nursing and involves providing advanced nursing assessment, care planning, and coordination for older patients with complex healthcare needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist clinical assessment and care planning for older persons with complex health needs
- Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary team meetings focused on elderly patient care
- Develop and implement evidence-based clinical protocols for geriatric patient populations
- Mentor and educate nursing staff in best practices for care of the older person
- Collaborate with medical staff, allied health professionals, and families to optimize patient outcomes
- Conduct clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives in elderly care services
- Provide clinical expertise and consultation to nursing staff across the hospital
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)
- Post-registration qualification in Care of the Older Person or related geriatric specialty
- Clinical Nurse Specialist qualification or eligibility to undertake CNS training
- Minimum 3-5 years post-registration clinical experience including specialist experience in elderly care
- Demonstrated expertise in assessment and management of complex geriatric conditions
- Strong leadership and interpersonal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Nursing or related healthcare discipline
- Experience in acute hospital geriatric services
- Previous experience in specialist nursing roles
- Knowledge of current HSE policies and procedures relating to elderly care
- Evidence of continuing professional development in gerontological nursing
