Leitrim County Council is seeking applications for the role of Community Climate Action Officer on a fixed-term contract basis until 31st December 2027. The Community Climate Action Officer will support the delivery of the Community Climate Action Programme (CCAP), helping communities identify and develop projects that contribute towards Ireland’s climate goals. The role will also support the implementation of the Leitrim Climate Action Plan and wider sustainability initiatives throughout the county.

Job Overview

This Community Climate Action Officer job in Leitrim offers a meaningful opportunity to support environmental sustainability, community engagement, and climate awareness initiatives within local government. The successful candidate will work closely with local communities, Public Participation Networks (PPNs), businesses, and internal council departments to drive positive climate action projects and funding initiatives.

The position combines project coordination, stakeholder engagement, funding administration, and climate advocacy within a progressive local authority environment committed to sustainable development and community wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of the Community Climate Action Programme (CCAP) across County Leitrim.
  • Engage with local communities, PPNs, sporting organisations, and businesses to promote climate action initiatives.
  • Coordinate expressions of interest for climate action funding opportunities.
  • Evaluate project applications and support successful funding applicants throughout project delivery.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, correspondence, and project updates related to climate action activities.
  • Monitor expenditure and assist with financial management of operational and capital projects.
  • Promote awareness of sustainability initiatives and climate adaptation measures.
  • Act as a point of contact for the GAA Green Clubs Programme within Leitrim County Council.
  • Represent Leitrim County Council at meetings, committees, and community events as required.
  • Work collaboratively across council departments to support climate action objectives.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • A third-level qualification of at least degree standard or equivalent educational qualifications as outlined by Leitrim County Council.
  • Relevant administrative experience at a sufficiently high professional level.
  • Strong communication, organisational, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience preparing reports, presentations, and administrative documentation.
  • Knowledge of climate action, sustainability, local government functions, or environmental policy.
  • Financial and budget management experience.
  • Strong ICT and digital administration skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • A current full Category B driving licence or equivalent EU licence.
  • Knowledge of community engagement, project management, or event coordination is desirable.

Salary, Benefits and Working Hours

The salary scale for this Community Climate Action Officer role, analogous to Grade VI, ranges from €57,895 to €70,730, including long service increments. Entry point placement will be determined in accordance with relevant public sector and Departmental circulars.
