About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Consultant Physician to lead our Geriatric Medicine services at St Luke’s General Hospital, Carlow/Kilkenny. This 37-hour permanent position involves providing expert medical care to elderly patients with complex healthcare needs. You will work within a multidisciplinary team to deliver comprehensive geriatric assessments, treatment planning, and ongoing care management across acute and community settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist medical care and treatment for elderly patients with complex geriatric conditions across acute hospital and community settings
- Lead comprehensive geriatric assessments and develop individualized care plans for patients with multiple comorbidities
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including nursing staff, allied health professionals, and social services to optimize patient outcomes
- Participate in on-call rotas and emergency geriatric medicine consultations as required by the department
- Contribute to medical education and training programs for junior doctors, nursing staff, and medical students in geriatric medicine
- Engage in clinical governance activities, quality improvement initiatives, and evidence-based practice development
- Participate in research activities and contribute to the advancement of geriatric medicine practice and patient care standards
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Full registration with the Irish Medical Council or eligibility for registration
- Specialist registration in Geriatric Medicine or equivalent recognized qualification
- Minimum of 6 years post-graduate medical experience with substantial experience in geriatric medicine
- Completion of higher specialist training in Geriatric Medicine or equivalent international qualification
- Demonstrated clinical competence in comprehensive geriatric assessment and management of elderly patients
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in acute geriatric medicine and stroke care services
- Additional training or certification in areas such as dementia care, falls prevention, or palliative care
- Previous consultant-level experience in geriatric medicine or related medical specialties
- Research experience and publications in geriatric medicine or related fields
- Leadership experience in healthcare settings and multidisciplinary team management
