Job Overview
The H.S.S.D. Operative at Cork University Hospital plays a vital role in supporting safe and effective patient care by ensuring the decontamination, sterilisation, and distribution of medical and surgical instruments. This permanent wholetime position offers the opportunity to work within a busy acute hospital environment as part of the HSE South West team.
This H.S.S.D. Operative Cork University Hospital role is ideal for candidates who are detail-oriented, committed to quality standards, and motivated to contribute to infection prevention and control practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Decontaminate, inspect, assemble and sterilise surgical instruments and medical devices in accordance with national guidelines and hospital policies.
- Operate and monitor sterilisation equipment including washer-disinfectors and autoclaves.
- Ensure all instruments and equipment meet required quality and safety standards before release.
- Maintain accurate documentation and tracking of sterile supplies.
- Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols at all times.
- Work collaboratively with theatre staff and clinical departments to meet service demands.
- Report equipment faults or quality concerns promptly to supervisors.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Previous experience in a sterile services or healthcare support environment is desirable.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to high standards of hygiene and safety.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Good communication and organisational skills.
- Willingness to undertake relevant training and continuous professional development.
- Flexibility to work required shifts in a hospital setting.

- Salary in line with HSE consolidated pay scales for C.S.S.D. Operative (Grade 5785), in accordance with Department of Health Circular 1/2025 and public service agreements.

Location & Employer Information
This position is based at Cork University Hospital, one of Ireland’s largest acute teaching hospitals, located in Cork City. The hospital provides a comprehensive range of medical and surgical services and is part of HSE South West (Kerry and Cork).
As this is a Health Service Executive role, the post is governed by national public service pay and employment policies.
