Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown, part of the HSE Dublin and North East region, is seeking a dedicated Registrar in Medicine for the Elderly (MFTE) to join our specialist geriatric team. This fixed-term wholetime position offers excellent training opportunities in elderly care medicine within a busy acute hospital setting.
About the Role
This Registrar position in Medicine for the Elderly provides comprehensive training and experience in the assessment, treatment, and ongoing care of older patients. You’ll work within a multidisciplinary team delivering specialist geriatric services at Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown, gaining valuable experience in acute elderly care, stroke rehabilitation, and comprehensive geriatric assessment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality clinical care to elderly patients across inpatient wards and outpatient clinics under consultant supervision
- Conduct comprehensive geriatric assessments including medical, functional, psychological, and social evaluations
- Participate actively in ward rounds, clinical meetings, and multidisciplinary team discussions regarding patient care
- Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans for complex elderly patients with multiple comorbidities
- Maintain accurate and timely medical records in compliance with hospital policies and professional standards
- Contribute to medical education through teaching medical students, interns, and junior medical staff
- Participate in the on-call rota system providing emergency cover for Medicine for the Elderly services
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Medical Qualification: Primary medical degree (MB BCh BAO or equivalent) recognized by the Irish Medical Council
- IMC Registration: Current full registration or eligibility for full registration with the Medical Council of Ireland
- Postgraduate Training: Minimum 2 years of postgraduate clinical experience in relevant medical specialties
- Clinical Skills: Demonstrated competence in elderly care medicine, comprehensive geriatric assessment, and management of frailty
- MRCP or Equivalent: Progress towards or completion of postgraduate medical examinations (MRCP, MRCPI, or equivalent)
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in geriatric medicine, stroke medicine, or rehabilitation medicine
- Completion of Basic Specialist Training (BST) or equivalent in Medicine for the Elderly
- Evidence of audit, research, or quality improvement activities in elderly care
- Advanced life support certification (ACLS, PALS as appropriate)
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams
