The Health Service Executive (HSE) is seeking an experienced and dedicated Senior Medical Officer to join our Public Health team across multiple locations in the Dublin and South East region. This is a permanent, wholetime position offering an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful impact on community health outcomes while working within Ireland’s national health service.
About the Role
As a Senior Medical Officer in Public Health, you will play a crucial role in protecting and improving population health across the HSE Dublin South and South East region, covering Carlow, Kilkenny, South Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford, Wicklow East, and South Dublin. This is not a hospital-based post, but rather a strategic public health position focused on disease prevention, health promotion, and population health management. You will be based at one of our key public health locations: St Canices in Kilkenny, Dr Steeven’s Hospital in Dublin 8, or Stewarts Hospital in Palmerstown, Dublin 20.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead public health initiatives and programmes across assigned geographic areas, focusing on disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, and health protection activities
- Provide expert medical advice on public health matters to health service management, local authorities, and other stakeholders
- Conduct epidemiological investigations and risk assessments in response to communicable disease outbreaks and environmental health threats
- Develop and implement evidence-based health promotion strategies targeting priority health issues within local communities
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary public health teams, including specialists in public health medicine, environmental health officers, and other healthcare professionals
- Contribute to public health surveillance systems through data collection, analysis, and interpretation to inform service planning and policy development
- Participate in emergency preparedness planning and response activities for public health incidents
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Primary medical qualification (MB BCh BAO or equivalent) recognized by the Irish Medical Council
- Full registration with the Irish Medical Council, with eligibility to work in Ireland
- Minimum of 3-5 years post-registration medical experience, with demonstrated interest or experience in public health practice
- Strong understanding of public health principles, epidemiology, and health promotion methodologies
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders
- Current driving license and access to own transport (essential for community-based work)
Preferred Qualifications
- Postgraduate qualification in public health (MPH, Diploma in Public Health, or working toward such qualification)
- Previous experience working in public health medicine, community health services, or related field
- Experience in outbreak investigation, disease surveillance, or health protection activities
- Knowledge of Irish health service structures and public health legislation
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development in public health
