Job Overview
The Senior Occupational Therapist Mayo Hospital role offers an exciting opportunity to join the Orthopaedics team at Mayo University Hospital. This permanent wholetime position focuses on delivering high-quality, evidence-based occupational therapy services within acute orthopaedic care.
The successful candidate will play a key role in assessment, intervention, splinting, rehabilitation planning and discharge coordination for patients presenting with general acute orthopaedic conditions and older adults with complex needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist occupational therapy assessment and intervention for acute orthopaedic patients.
- Deliver evidence-based rehabilitation programmes tailored to individual patient needs.
- Design and implement splinting solutions with clear clinical rationale.
- Conduct cognitive and functional assessments, particularly for older adults with cognitive impairments such as dementia or delirium.
- Lead discharge planning in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
- Support safe transitions of care from hospital to community settings.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation in line with HSE policies.
- Contribute to service development, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Registration as an Occupational Therapist with CORU.
- Minimum 12 months’ satisfactory post-registration orthopaedic experience in acute settings.
- Minimum 12 months’ experience working in acute settings with older adults, including those with cognitive impairments.
- Demonstrated depth and breadth of clinical knowledge in acute orthopaedic care.
- Proven competence in splinting (candidates must bring a designed splint to interview and explain its clinical rationale within a case scenario).
- Strong multidisciplinary teamwork and communication skills.
- Commitment to evidence-based practice and ongoing professional development.
Salary, Benefits & Working Hours
- Grade: Occupational Therapist – Senior (Grade Code 3301).
- Salary: In accordance with HSE consolidated pay scales (February 2026 revision).
- Annual salary scale from €63,279 to €74,509 (pro rata for part-time, if applicable).
