Sligo University Hospital is seeking an experienced Senior Orthoptist to join its Ophthalmology team within HSE West and North West. This specified purpose wholetime post offers an excellent opportunity to lead and deliver high-quality orthoptic services in a dynamic acute hospital environment.
Job Overview
The Senior Orthoptist will play a key clinical and leadership role within the Orthoptic Department at Sligo University Hospital. The successful candidate will demonstrate significant experience in Ophthalmology and contribute to service development, clinical governance, and patient-centred care delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide advanced orthoptic assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients within the Ophthalmology service.
- Lead and support service development initiatives within the Orthoptic Department.
- Supervise and support junior orthoptic staff as required.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and collaborative care planning.
- Maintain accurate clinical records in line with HSE standards and best practice.
- Contribute to quality improvement, audit, and clinical governance activities.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and professional standards.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Recognised qualification in Orthoptics.
- Registration with CORU as an Orthoptist.
- Demonstrated depth and breadth of experience in Ophthalmology relevant to a senior role.
- Proven clinical leadership and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

- Salary aligned with HSE Grade: Orthoptist – Senior (Grade Code 3417) in accordance with the Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 August 2025
