About the Role
As a Speech & Language Therapist (Staff Grade) at University Hospital Waterford, you will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of treatment programmes for service users according to professional standards. This permanent position offers the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary team environment, providing specialized care across our diverse patient population of approximately 500,000 people in the southeast region.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive assessments and develop evidence-based treatment plans for communication and swallowing disorders
- Implement specialized intervention programmes in appropriate clinical settings following local policies and professional guidelines
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including medical staff, nursing, and other allied health professionals in patient care
- Document all clinical activities including assessments, treatment plans, and progress notes in accordance with department standards
- Provide education and support to patients, families, and carers regarding communication and swallowing disorders
- Participate in ward rounds, case conferences, and clinical meetings as part of integrated care delivery
- Engage in quality improvement activities and contribute to service development initiatives
- Supervise and mentor student speech and language therapists during clinical placements
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent recognized qualification
- Registration with CORU (Health and Social Care Professionals Council)
- Minimum 2 years post-qualification experience in clinical speech and language therapy
- Strong clinical assessment and intervention skills across diverse patient populations
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with patients, families, and colleagues
Preferred Qualifications
- Postgraduate qualifications in specialized areas of speech and language therapy
- Experience in acute hospital settings or multi-disciplinary team environments
- Knowledge of dysphagia management and videofluoroscopy procedures
- Research or audit experience in speech and language therapy practice
