HSE West and North West is seeking a dedicated Staff Nurse to join our Older Persons Services team at St. Joseph’s Community Hospital in Donegal. This essential healthcare role offers multiple contract options including permanent and fixed-term positions, both full-time and part-time arrangements available.
About the Role
As a Staff Nurse in Older Persons Services, you’ll provide specialized nursing care to elderly patients in a community hospital setting. You’ll work as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, reporting to the Director of Nursing while delivering person-centered care focused on the unique needs of older adults.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to elderly patients with complex health conditions and age-related care needs
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualized care plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team
- Administer medications safely and maintain accurate patient records in accordance with nursing standards
- Support patients and families through health transitions while promoting dignity and independence
- Monitor vital signs, wound care management, and recognize changes in patient conditions requiring intervention
- Participate in discharge planning and coordinate care transitions to ensure continuity of services
- Maintain infection control protocols and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Registration with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) as a General Nurse
- Minimum 2 years post-qualification nursing experience, preferably in geriatric or community healthcare settings
- Demonstrated knowledge of older person care principles, age-related conditions, and dementia care approaches
- Current CPR certification and commitment to continuing professional development in gerontological nursing
Preferred Qualifications
- Postgraduate qualification in Gerontology, Older Person Care, or related nursing specialization
- Experience working in HSE or Irish healthcare system with understanding of public health service delivery
- Additional training in areas such as wound care, medication management, or palliative care approaches
