The HSE Mid West is inviting applications for the position of Head of Bed Management at University Hospital Limerick. This is a key management role focused on optimizing patient flow, ensuring efficient use of hospital beds, and improving discharge and admission processes across acute services in the region.
About the Role
The Head of Bed Management (Grade VIII) will lead the hospital’s Bed Management Department, overseeing coordination of admissions, discharges, and transfers to maintain optimal patient flow and bed utilization. The role is integral to hospital operations and requires a strong background in healthcare management, data analysis, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the strategic planning and operational management of bed capacity across the hospital.
- Coordinate patient flow between departments and with community care partners.
- Develop and implement policies to improve patient throughput and discharge planning.
- Monitor occupancy rates, length of stay, and admission KPIs.
- Collaborate with Clinical Nurse Managers, Consultants, and administrative teams to ensure effective patient transitions.
- Manage and mentor staff within the Bed Management team.
- Report on performance metrics to senior hospital management.
Required Qualifications
Essential
- Hold a third-level qualification in Healthcare Management, Nursing, or a related discipline.
- Minimum five years’ experience in an acute hospital or healthcare operations management role.
- Strong knowledge of bed management systems and patient flow processes.
- Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and drive process improvement.
Preferred
- Postgraduate qualification in Health Service Management or Leadership.
- Experience with HSE operational frameworks and hospital information systems.
- Data analysis and reporting expertise using hospital performance dashboards.
What We Offer

- Salary aligned with HSE Grade VIII (Code 0655) – per the August 1st, 2025 consolidated salary scales, currently ranging from approximately €78,000 – €92,000 per annum, depending on experience.
