Galway University Hospitals is recruiting a permanent, full-time Medical Scientist (Biochemistry) based in Galway. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced laboratory professional to join one of Ireland’s leading university hospital groups and contribute to a high-volume, cutting-edge Clinical Biochemistry service.

The Role

As a Medical Scientist in the Clinical Biochemistry department at Galway University Hospitals, you will play a central role in delivering an accurate and timely diagnostic laboratory service. This position requires demonstrable depth of experience in Biochemistry, as well as a proven track record of working within a large, automated Biochemistry laboratory environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform high-quality laboratory testing and analysis within the Clinical Biochemistry department.
  • Operate and maintain large-scale automated laboratory instrumentation to manufacturer and departmental standards.
  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of test results, adhering to quality management systems and accreditation standards.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of laboratory processes, procedures, and turnaround times.
  • Participate in quality assurance programmes, audits, and compliance activities.
  • Collaborate effectively with clinical, nursing, and wider laboratory teams to support patient care.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of developments in clinical biochemistry and laboratory science.

Requirements

  • Hold a qualification in Medical Science or a related discipline that confers eligibility for the role.
  • Be registered, or be eligible for registration, with CORU as a Medical Scientist.
  • Demonstrate in-depth experience in Biochemistry as relevant to the role.
  • Demonstrate in-depth experience of working in a large automated Biochemistry laboratory.
  • Possess strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Note for 2026 Graduates: Candidates due to graduate in 2026 are eligible to apply. Those who are successful at interview and who will complete their studies in 2026 will remain dormant on the panel and will not be offered a post until they have confirmed receipt of the necessary qualification.

Salary

€44,831 – €72,991 per annum (HSE Medical Scientist scale, 16-point scale, plus LSIs where applicable). Based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 February 2026.
