Mallow General Hospital (HSE South West) is inviting applications for a permanent wholetime Medical Scientist (Basic Grade) to join the multidisciplinary laboratory team. About the Role
As a Medical Scientist (Basic Grade), you will perform diagnostic laboratory investigations to support patient care in accordance with HSE standards. The successful candidate will contribute to the hospital’s clinical laboratory services, ensuring accurate and timely delivery of test results within accredited quality frameworks.
This post is based at Mallow General Hospital, a key facility within the HSE South West health region, providing acute and elective services to a large catchment population.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and specialist laboratory testing in line with SOPs and quality standards.
- Validate, interpret, and report results using laboratory information systems.
- Ensure all equipment and reagents are maintained and calibrated appropriately.
- Participate in internal and external quality assurance programmes.
- Assist in audits, accreditation activities, and service improvement initiatives.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with data protection legislation.
- Contribute to staff training, continuing professional development, and departmental meetings.
Required Qualifications
Essential
- Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Medical Science or equivalent qualification recognised by CORU.
- Eligibility for registration (or current registration) with CORU as a Medical Scientist.
- Demonstrated experience or placement in a clinical laboratory environment.
- Strong analytical, organisational, and communication skills.
Preferred
- Experience working within an ISO 15189-accredited laboratory.
- Familiarity with HSE quality management systems and health service protocols.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and participation in CPD activities.
