The Health Service Executive (HSE) is inviting applications for the position of Medical Scientist, Staff Grade – Microbiology based at Sligo University Hospital, County Sligo.
This permanent, wholetime post offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to high-quality diagnostic microbiology services across the HSE West and North West region, supporting clinical teams in the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care.
As part of the Microbiology Laboratory team, the successful candidate will perform a range of microbiological investigations, participate in laboratory quality assurance, and contribute to the continuous improvement of diagnostic services.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and specialist microbiological tests in line with ISO 15189 accreditation standards.
- Ensure accurate, timely, and validated results are communicated to clinical teams.
- Participate in quality control, proficiency testing, and laboratory audits.
- Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation.
- Support infection prevention and control initiatives through accurate data reporting.
- Engage in continuing professional development and training of junior staff or students.
Qualifications & Experience
Applicants must:
- Hold a recognised Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Biomedical Science (Microbiology or equivalent), accredited by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM).
- Be eligible for or currently registered with CORU under the Medical Scientists Registration Board.
- Demonstrate depth and breadth of experience in Microbiology, ideally in a hospital or public health laboratory setting.
- Possess strong analytical, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.

Salary Scale (effective 1 August 2025):
€41,503 – €68,927 per annum (based on the Department of Health Consolidated Salary Scales, August 2025).
