Mayo University Hospital, part of the HSE West and North West region, is seeking a Medical Scientist (Staff Grade) to join the Microbiology Laboratory. This permanent wholetime position offers the opportunity to contribute to high-quality diagnostic services within one of Ireland’s leading regional hospitals.
About the Role
As a Medical Scientist in Microbiology, you will play a vital role in the delivery of accurate and timely laboratory results supporting clinical diagnosis and treatment. The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary laboratory team providing essential microbiological testing and infection control support.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform and interpret microbiological tests in accordance with ISO 15189 standards.
- Participate in quality management, method validation, and internal/external audits.
- Maintain and calibrate laboratory instruments to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Support infection prevention and control initiatives through diagnostic reporting.
- Liaise with clinicians, nursing staff, and laboratory colleagues to ensure efficient communication of results.
- Participate in continuous professional development and departmental training activities.
- Contribute to service improvement projects and compliance with HSE laboratory policies.
Required Qualifications
Essential
- Hold a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Science or equivalent qualification recognised by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM).
- Be registered or eligible for registration with CORU.
- Demonstrate depth and breadth of experience in clinical microbiology relevant to the post.
Preferred
- Experience in a hospital microbiology setting.
- Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
- Evidence of participation in quality improvement or accreditation processes.
