Join Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise, part of the HSE Dublin and Midlands Health Region, as a Specialist Medical Scientist in Specimen Reception. About the Role
As a Specialist Medical Scientist in Specimen Reception, you’ll play a key role in ensuring the efficient receipt, handling, and processing of diagnostic specimens. Working within the Pathology Department, you’ll support accurate laboratory testing and the timely delivery of results critical to patient treatment.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee specimen reception operations in compliance with laboratory quality standards.
- Ensure correct sample identification, sorting, and routing to appropriate laboratory sections.
- Maintain data integrity through accurate entry in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Supervise and support medical scientists and laboratory aides in specimen handling.
- Monitor and maintain laboratory equipment and consumables in accordance with HSE protocols.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality service delivery.
- Contribute to audits, training, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications
Essential
- Hold a recognised qualification in Medical Science as approved by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU.
- Be registered with CORU or eligible for registration.
- A minimum of four years’ post-qualification experience as a Medical Scientist.
- Demonstrated expertise in laboratory quality systems and specimen management.
Preferred
- Experience in accreditation compliance (ISO 15189).
- Previous supervisory or team lead experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
- Strong IT and LIMS skills.
