The Health Service Executive (HSE) Mid-West is seeking a Staff Grade Physicist to join the Radiology & Diagnostic Services team at University Hospital Limerick (UHL). This is a permanent wholetime opportunity for a qualified and motivated physicist to contribute to high-quality diagnostic imaging and patient safety within one of Ireland’s most advanced acute hospital environments.

About the Role

As a Staff Grade Physicist (Grade Code 3794), you will play a key role in supporting the safe and effective use of diagnostic and therapeutic technologies across the Mid-West region. Reporting to the Chief Physicist, you will provide physics expertise in diagnostic radiology, radiation protection, and quality assurance to ensure compliance with statutory and clinical standards.

This post is based at University Hospital Limerick, serving the Mid-West hospitals group, including facilities in Limerick, Clare, and North Tipperary. The role offers exposure to a wide range of modalities including CT, MRI, Nuclear Medicine, and Ultrasound.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the operation and quality assurance of diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy equipment.
  • Perform radiation protection assessments in accordance with Irish and EU legislation.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain calibration and testing procedures for imaging systems.
  • Advise clinical and technical teams on safe radiation practices.
  • Contribute to commissioning of new equipment and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports on QA and compliance outcomes.
  • Participate in research, audit, and education within the physics department.

Required Qualifications

Essential

  • An honours degree (Level 8) in Physics or a related discipline suitable for clinical physics practice.
  • Demonstrated experience in medical physics, ideally within diagnostic imaging or radiation safety.
  • Strong understanding of radiation protection regulations and quality management systems.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification (MSc or PhD) in Medical Physics or equivalent.
  • Experience in hospital-based physics or health technology QA.
  • Membership or eligibility for membership of the Irish College of Physicists in Medicine (ICPM) or equivalent body.

    Staff Grade Physicist (Grade 3794) – approximately €59,000 – €80,000 per annum, dependent on experience and incremental credit.
