About the Role

As a Prison Officer with the Irish Prison Service, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining safety, security, and supporting prisoner rehabilitation across our network of facilities. This entry-level position offers extensive training leading to a Higher Certificate in Custodial Care and provides opportunities for career advancement within Ireland’s criminal justice system.

Key Responsibilities

• Ensure safe and secure custody of prisoners through daily monitoring, accountability procedures, and maintaining vigilance across all prison areas
• Support prisoner rehabilitation by facilitating access to education, training, healthcare, psychology services, and family visits
• Maintain security protocols including conducting searches, monitoring surveillance systems, and implementing emergency response procedures
• Escort prisoners safely to courts, hospitals, and other locations as required, ensuring security at all times
• Manage prisoner interactions professionally while building appropriate relationships that support behavioral change and rehabilitation
• Complete detailed documentation including incident reports, prisoner records, and daily operational logs
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including healthcare staff, probation officers, and educational coordinators

Required Qualifications

Essential Requirements

• Age: Minimum 18 years old (born on or before July 31st, 2007)
• Education: Leaving Certificate with minimum Grade D3 (O6 post 2017) in 5 subjects, OR Level 5 Major Award (120 credits), OR equivalent qualification
• Citizenship: EU/EEA citizen, UK citizen, Swiss citizen, or non-EEA citizen with appropriate visa status
• Physical fitness: Ability to meet demanding physical requirements including emergency response situations

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in security, law enforcement, or customer service roles
• Additional certifications in conflict resolution or crisis management
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Commitment to continuous professional development
