Join the HSE West and North West team as a Professor Consultant General Surgeon, combining clinical leadership at University Hospital Galway with academic responsibilities at the University of Galway. This is a permanent, wholetime post (37 hours weekly, split evenly between clinical and academic duties) for an experienced surgeon ready to contribute to both patient care and surgical education.
About the Role
As Professor Consultant General Surgeon (Grade 1279), you will deliver high-quality surgical services and lead in teaching, research, and clinical innovation. Working 18.5 hours per week at University Hospital Galway and 18.5 hours at the University of Galway, you’ll contribute to the development of future surgeons while maintaining a strong focus on patient outcomes and service delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-level general surgical care and on-call services.
- Lead and participate in undergraduate and postgraduate surgical teaching.
- Drive surgical research and innovation aligned with university and hospital goals.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to enhance perioperative care standards.
- Contribute to service development and clinical governance within the hospital group.
- Supervise junior doctors, researchers, and surgical trainees.
- Engage in audit, quality improvement, and continuing professional development activities.
Required Qualifications
Essential
- Full registration with the Irish Medical Council (Specialist Division – Surgery).
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent.
- Proven expertise and experience in General Surgery.
- Strong teaching and research credentials suitable for a professorial appointment.
Preferred
- Previous experience in a university hospital setting.
- Record of published research in surgical disciplines.
- Leadership in clinical education or service development initiatives.
