The Irish Naval Service is now recruiting Direct Entry Radio Radar Technicians to join its team at Naval Base Haulbowline, Cork. About the Role
As a Radio Radar Technician (RRT) with the Naval Service, you will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and operational support of critical communications, radar, and electronic navigation systems across naval vessels and shore-based facilities. Your expertise will directly contribute to the readiness and operational efficiency of Ireland’s maritime defence capability.
Leading Radio Radar Technicians (L/RRTs) progress to Petty Officer responsibilities, overseeing the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of all onboard communication and navigation equipment. The role also involves active participation in emergency response and damage control duties, including firefighting exercises at sea and on land.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain, repair, and provide operational support for communications, radar, and electronic navigation systems on Naval Service vessels and shore-based facilities
- Ensure the readiness and operational efficiency of naval systems at sea and on land
- Progress to Leading RRT level, managing the installation, operation, and maintenance of all onboard communication and navigation equipment
- Participate in emergency response and damage control duties, including firefighting exercises
- Support vital maritime operations as part of Ireland’s principal seagoing defence agency
Requirements and Qualifications
Candidates must hold one of the following qualifications:
- B.Eng in Electronic Engineering (HETAC Level 7)
- B.Eng in Marine Electrotechnology (HETAC Level 7)
- B.Eng Ordinary Degree in Electronic Engineering — Military Communication Systems (IT Carlow)
- A national equivalent qualification, subject to review and approval by the Naval Service
Additional eligibility requirements:
- Aged 18 or over and under 39 years of age at the time of application (proof of age required)
- Minimum height of 5ft 2in (157.48cm), which will be verified during the selection process
- No tattoos visible above the collar while in service; this will be checked during selection
- Must meet work permit eligibility criteria: a minimum of 5 years’ eligibility to remain in Ireland is required
- Must meet medical, physical, and security clearance standards, assessed during the recruitment process
- Fluent English required
