About the Role

As a Registrar in Anaesthetics, you’ll work as part of a dedicated theatre and perioperative care team providing comprehensive anaesthetic and critical care services. This role involves pre-operative assessment, intra-operative management, post-operative care, and participation in the on-call rota for theatre and intensive care services.

The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based anaesthetic care across surgical specialties including general, orthopaedic, and emergency surgery. This position supports both patient care and registrar-level training in line with the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland (CAI) standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide anaesthetic care for elective and emergency surgical procedures.
  • Participate in the anaesthetic on-call and emergency cover rota.
  • Conduct pre-operative assessments and manage post-operative patients in recovery and ICU settings.
  • Support multidisciplinary care planning across acute and critical care units.
  • Contribute to teaching and supervision of junior doctors, students, and nursing staff.
  • Engage in departmental audits, morbidity and mortality meetings, and research initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with HSE clinical governance and patient safety standards.

Required Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered with or eligible for registration on the General Division of the Irish Medical Council (IMC).
  • Minimum of two years’ post-graduate experience in anaesthesia or a related acute specialty.
  • Demonstrated competency in airway management, regional anaesthesia, and perioperative medicine.
  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred

  • Experience in intensive care medicine or emergency medicine.
  • Current or prior enrolment in the CAI Anaesthesia Training Scheme or equivalent international programme.
  • Evidence of participation in research, audit, or quality improvement initiatives.
  • Strong communication, teaching, and leadership skills.
