About the Role
University Hospital Waterford is seeking a dedicated Senior House Officer for our Ophthalmology Department. You’ll provide specialized eye care services within our dynamic ophthalmology unit while developing advanced clinical skills in this rewarding medical specialty. This role reports to the Consultant Ophthalmologist team and offers excellent career progression opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver comprehensive ophthalmology patient care across outpatient clinics, emergency presentations, and ward-based services
- Manage acute eye conditions including emergency referrals, trauma cases, and post-operative care under consultant supervision
- Participate in on-call rotations providing 24/7 ophthalmology emergency cover for the South East region
- Conduct specialized procedures including minor surgical interventions, injections, and diagnostic examinations
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including nursing staff, orthoptists, and allied health professionals
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and participate in audit activities and quality improvement initiatives
- Engage in continuous professional development through teaching sessions, research activities, and conference attendance
Essential Requirements
Education: Primary medical qualification recognized by the Medical Council of Ireland plus 2+ years post-graduate experience
Experience: Minimum 12 months in ophthalmology or related surgical specialty with demonstrated competency in eye examination techniques
Registration: Full registration with the Medical Council of Ireland or eligible for specialist registration
Skills: Excellent clinical assessment abilities, strong communication skills, and proficiency in ophthalmoscopy and slit-lamp examination
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced ophthalmology experience in subspecialty areas such as retinal conditions, glaucoma, or corneal disorders
- Surgical training in minor ophthalmology procedures and emergency interventions
- Research experience with publications in peer-reviewed ophthalmology or medical journals
- Teaching qualifications or demonstrable experience in medical education and training
