We are seeking a Senior House Officer specializing in Orthopaedics to join our dynamic team at Mayo University Hospital, a leading acute care facility serving the western region.
About the Role
This is an exciting fixed-term wholetime opportunity for an experienced Orthopaedic SHO to advance their surgical career in a well-equipped, modern hospital environment. You’ll work alongside consultant orthopaedic surgeons, contributing to a wide range of orthopaedic procedures while developing your specialist skills in musculoskeletal medicine and trauma surgery.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive orthopaedic care to patients across emergency, elective, and trauma settings
- Assist in surgical procedures including joint replacements, fracture repairs, and arthroscopic interventions
- Conduct patient assessments, develop treatment plans, and manage post-operative care
- Participate in on-call rotas for emergency orthopaedic cases and trauma admissions
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and nursing staff
- Maintain accurate patient records and contribute to clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives
- Engage in continuous professional development and teaching of junior medical staff
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Active IMC registration (Irish Medical Council) – applications without active IMC will not be accepted
- Minimum 2 years post-internship experience specifically in Orthopaedics specialty
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Valid OET/IELTS examination results (where applicable for international candidates)
- Strong clinical decision-making skills and ability to work under pressure
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous Irish, UK, or EU healthcare experience highly desirable
- Experience in trauma orthopaedics and emergency surgical procedures
- Additional surgical training or certifications in orthopaedic subspecialties
- Research experience or publications in orthopaedic medicine
