HSE Dublin and South East is seeking a dedicated Senior House Officer in Orthopaedics for our University Hospital Waterford and Kilcreene Regional Orthopaedic Hospital locations. This fixed-term wholetime position offers exceptional surgical training opportunities and the chance to develop expertise in orthopaedic medicine within Ireland’s leading healthcare system.
Job Overview
As a Senior House Officer in Orthopaedics, you’ll provide essential medical care within our specialist orthopaedic departments. You’ll gain valuable experience in surgical procedures, patient management, and trauma care while working alongside consultant orthopaedic surgeons. This role reports to the Medical Manpower Department and offers comprehensive professional development.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead orthopaedic patient assessments and develop treatment plans
- Manage pre and post-operative patient care in surgical environments
- Collaborate with consultant surgeons, nursing teams, and allied health professionals
- Ensure adherence to HSE clinical guidelines and patient safety protocols
- Develop surgical skills through supervised training and mentorship
- Participate in emergency trauma call rotas and urgent orthopaedic referrals
- Contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings and clinical audits
Essential Qualifications
Education: Primary medical degree recognized by the Medical Council of Ireland
Experience:
- Foundation training or equivalent medical experience
- 6+ months in hospital-based medicine
- Previous orthopaedic or surgical exposure preferred
Certifications:
- Full registration with the Medical Council of Ireland
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) desirable
Skills:
- Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic abilities
- Excellent communication and teamwork capabilities
- Commitment to continuous professional development
Preferred Qualifications
- MRCS Part A examination completion
- Experience with orthopaedic surgical procedures
- Knowledge of trauma management protocols
- Additional surgical training courses
- Research experience in orthopaedics or related fields
