About the Role
The HSE West and North West Community Services invites applications for the position of Senior Medical Officer (Oifigeach Leighis, Sinsearch) within the Older People’s Services team based at Sacred Heart Hospital, Castlebar, Co. Mayo.
This is a wholetime, permanent role within the HSE, open to both HSE and non-HSE applicants.
As a Senior Medical Officer, you will play a key role in providing high-quality medical care for older people across the region, ensuring continuity of care and supporting clinical governance within residential and community settings.
A panel may also be created to fill current and future Senior Medical Officer vacancies within the Older People’s Services across Galway, Mayo, and Roscommon.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver comprehensive medical services to residents in older people’s care facilities.
- Contribute to the multidisciplinary team in assessing, diagnosing, and managing patient care.
- Support the implementation of clinical policies and standards in line with HSE national frameworks.
- Provide leadership in promoting best practices in geriatric medicine and chronic disease management.
- Liaise with nursing and allied health professionals to ensure coordinated patient care.
Essential Requirements
- Full registration (or eligibility for registration) with the Irish Medical Council.
- Demonstrated experience in General Practice or Geriatric Medicine, with a particular focus on the care of older people.
- Proven ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Excellent communication, clinical decision-making, and organizational skills.
Desirable Experience
- Postgraduate qualification in Geriatrics, General Practice, or related discipline.
- Familiarity with HSE policies and frameworks governing Older People’s Services.
Salary Scale (as of 1 August 2025)
According to the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales (DoH Circular 6/2025) for grade code 183T Senior Medical Officer, the annual salary range is:
€95,845 – €114,646 per annum (8 incremental points).
