The Health Service Executive (HSE) West and North West invites applications for the position of Senior Medical Social Worker (Grade Code 3019). Based across Sligo and South Donegal, this post provides a rewarding opportunity to deliver high-quality social work services within acute, community, and social care settings.
As a member of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, you will play a key role in supporting patients, families, and carers—particularly those living with dementia—to access appropriate care, advocacy, and community supports.
This position is offered on both a permanent wholetime and permanent part-time basis.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide professional and comprehensive medical social work services to patients, their families, and carers across a range of healthcare settings.
- Undertake psychosocial assessments, care planning, and interventions to support patient wellbeing and recovery.
- Offer specialist expertise in dementia care, ensuring holistic, person-centred support for individuals and their families.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in Acute, Primary Care, Mental Health, and Social Care services.
- Develop and implement evidence-based social work practices in line with HSE policy and professional standards.
- Supervise, mentor, and provide guidance to staff and students as required.
- Participate in clinical governance, case reviews, and service development initiatives.
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates must, at the latest date for receipt of applications:
- Hold a National Qualification in Social Work (NQSW) or equivalent, and be registered (or eligible for registration) with CORU as a Social Worker.
- Demonstrate a minimum of three years’ relevant post-qualification experience in medical or healthcare social work.
- Show depth and breadth of experience in providing social work services across varied healthcare environments, particularly in dementia care.
- Possess strong interpersonal, assessment, and communication skills.
- Have a proven ability to work autonomously and collaboratively as part of an integrated care team.

Location and Work Arrangement
This post will be based primarily in Sligo/South Donegal, within the HSE West and North West region. The successful candidate may be required to work across multiple HSE sites in the area, as service needs dictate.
