Sligo University Hospital is recruiting a Senior Medical Social Worker (Grade 3019) to join its multidisciplinary team in a permanent, wholetime capacity. This is a significant clinical role within the HSE West and North West region, offering an experienced social work professional the opportunity to lead complex case management and contribute to high-quality patient care in an acute hospital setting.

Role Overview

The Senior Medical Social Worker will provide specialist social work services within the acute hospital environment at Sligo University Hospital. The post holder will work as a core member of multidisciplinary teams, with a particular focus on older adult care, complex discharge planning, and psychosocial assessment. This role demands a practitioner with well-developed skills in navigating complex medical and social situations, strong clinical judgement, and a commitment to person-centred practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry a complex caseload of medical social work cases within an acute hospital setting, including assessment, intervention, and discharge planning.
  • Provide specialist psychosocial assessment and support to patients and families across medical and surgical wards, with a focus on older adults.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams including consultants, nursing staff, allied health professionals, and community services.
  • Liaise with community and statutory agencies to coordinate appropriate post-discharge supports and safeguarding arrangements.
  • Provide supervision and professional guidance to Social Workers and Social Work students as required.
  • Contribute to service planning, development, and evaluation within the social work department.
  • Maintain accurate and timely case records in compliance with HSE documentation standards and data protection requirements.
  • Participate in audit, research, and quality improvement activities within the department.

Requirements

  • Hold a recognised qualification in Social Work and be registered with CORU as a Social Worker (or be eligible for registration).
  • Demonstrate depth and breadth of acute hospital experience working with older adults.
  • Demonstrate depth and breadth of relevant experience of multidisciplinary team work and collaboration within a medical setting.
  • Demonstrate depth and breadth of experience managing complex social work cases in medical social work.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities in a busy acute environment.
  • Full awareness of relevant legislation, HSE policies, and safeguarding frameworks applicable to the role.

Salary

This post is remunerated in accordance with the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 June 2026. The salary for the Senior Medical Social Worker (Grade 3019) is:

€72,407 – €83,520 per annum (7-point scale). There are no Long Service Increments (LSIs) applicable to this grade.

Location

Sligo University Hospital is the principal acute hospital serving Counties Sligo, Leitrim, and parts of Donegal and Roscommon within the HSE West and North West region. The hospital provides a comprehensive range of acute and specialist services, with a strong commitment to multidisciplinary and integrated care. The post is based on-site at Sligo University Hospital.
