We are seeking a dedicated Staff Nurse specializing in Hospice Palliative Care to join our expert healthcare team in Sligo.

About the Role

We are recruiting for a Registered General Nurse to work as an integral part of our 7-bed Inpatient Hospice Unit team at North West Hospice. This specialized nursing position focuses on palliative care nursing, where you will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate holistic care to the highest professional standards within our specialized hospice care model.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver specialized hospice palliative care to patients with life-limiting illnesses in our 7-bed inpatient unit
  • Assess and develop individualized care plans promoting optimum independence and enhanced quality of life
  • Provide holistic, person-centered nursing care following established palliative care protocols and best practices
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary hospice team including Consultants in Palliative Medicine, medical, nursing, and allied health professionals
  • Maintain therapeutic relationships with patients and families during end-of-life care transitions
  • Document patient care accurately using hospice-specific assessment tools and care planning systems
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives within the hospice care environment

Required Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • Registration with NMBI as a General Nurse with current practicing certificate
  • Minimum 2 years post-qualification nursing experience with palliative care or hospice experience preferred
  • Demonstrated competency in palliative care nursing including pain management, symptom control, and end-of-life care
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Commitment to person-centered care and understanding of hospice care philosophy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in Palliative Care or willingness to undertake specialized training
  • Experience in hospice, oncology, or specialized palliative care settings
  • Knowledge of community palliative care services and discharge planning
  • Additional training in bereavement support or complementary therapies

  • 7-bed Inpatient Unit (expanding to 12 single-room unit in 2026)
  • Community Palliative Care Team providing home-based care
  • Hospital Palliative Care Team at Sligo University Hospital
  • Complementary services including bereavement support, spiritual care, and volunteer programs

Our multidisciplinary team includes 3 Consultants in Palliative Medicine, specialized nursing staff, social work, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and pastoral care professionals.
