Staff Nurse – Neonatal Unit – Sligo | Sligo University Hospital

Sligo University Hospital, part of the HSE West and North West region, is seeking a dedicated Staff Nurse to join our specialized Neonatal Unit. This permanent part-time position offers the opportunity to provide expert nursing care to newborns and their families in a supportive, state-of-the-art healthcare environment.

About the Role

We are looking for a skilled Staff Nurse to join our Neonatal Unit at Sligo University Hospital, providing specialized nursing care to critically ill and premature newborns. You will work as part of our multidisciplinary team, delivering family-centered care while supporting parents during their most vulnerable time. This role reports to the Assistant Director of Nursing and offers excellent opportunities for professional development in neonatal nursing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized nursing care to neonates requiring intensive and high-dependency care in the Neonatal Unit
  • Monitor vital signs, administer medications, and manage complex medical equipment specific to neonatal care
  • Collaborate with neonatologists, pediatricians, and multidisciplinary teams to develop individualized care plans
  • Support and educate families, providing emotional support during stressful periods and preparing parents for discharge
  • Maintain accurate documentation and nursing records in accordance with hospital policies and professional standards
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based practice implementation within the Neonatal Unit
  • Mentor student nurses and junior staff members in neonatal nursing practices and procedures

Required Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • Registration with NMBI (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland) as a Registered General Nurse
  • Minimum 2-3 years post-qualification nursing experience, preferably in acute care settings
  • Experience or strong interest in neonatal nursing, pediatric nursing, or critical care environments
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification and willingness to obtain NLS (Neonatal Life Support)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU)
  • Post-graduate qualification in neonatal nursing, pediatric nursing, or intensive care nursing
  • Advanced life support certifications (NLS, PALS)
  • Experience with family-centered care approaches in neonatal settings
