The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is Ireland’s leading environmental regulator, protecting and improving the environment as a valued asset for present and future generations. We are seeking a dedicated Inspector/Scientific Officer (Level 4) to join our Environmental Compliance team across our Wexford headquarters or regional inspectorates in Dublin or Cork. About the Role
As an Inspector/Scientific Officer specializing in environmental compliance, you will play a crucial role in monitoring and regulating EPA-licensed facilities across Ireland. This position combines scientific expertise with regulatory enforcement, requiring you to assess complex environmental applications, conduct inspections, and ensure compliance with Irish and EU environmental legislation. You will report to senior management within the EPA’s regulatory framework.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct environmental inspections and audits of EPA regulated facilities including industrial, waste, and wastewater treatment plants
- Assess and analyze complex environmental applications for Industrial, Waste, VOCs, GMOs, Dumping at Sea, and Greenhouse Gas authorizations
- Prepare comprehensive environmental impact assessments and appropriate assessments for major development projects
- Monitor and report on environmental data including preparation of national environmental quality reports and sectoral trend analysis
- Enforce environmental licence conditions and regulations across multiple sectors including participation in legal proceedings
- Develop and deliver technical guidance and training to regulated industries and environmental stakeholders
- Collaborate with regulatory partners at national and European level including non-government organizations and advocacy groups
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Degree qualification: NFQ Level 8 in Science or Engineering, or relevant NFQ Level 9 postgraduate qualification
- Two years relevant experience preferably in regulatory environment, including one of the following areas:
- Critical review and assessment of complex environmental technical reports and applications
- Environmental audits, inspections, and licence condition enforcement
- Interpretation and implementation of Irish & EU Environmental Legislation
- Technical report preparation and regulatory assessments
- Excellent communication skills with ability to convey complex environmental information clearly to diverse audiences
- Team collaboration experience with proven track record in high-performance technical teams
- Full valid Irish/EU driving licence (Class B) or licence acceptable for NDLS transfer
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced environmental specialization in areas such as industrial emissions, waste management, or water quality
- Regulatory enforcement experience in environmental protection or related field
- Market surveillance or chemical regulation background
- Environmental monitoring and assessment expertise
