Consultant Microbiologist – Microbiology Department – Tullamore | HSE Dublin & Midlands

HSE Dublin & Midlands is seeking an experienced Consultant Microbiologist to join our Microbiology Department across two dynamic locations in Tullamore and the broader Dublin & Midlands region. This permanent wholetime position offers 37 hours per week split between Midlands Regional Hospital, Tullamore and HSE Dublin & Midlands facilities.

About the Role

We are looking for a skilled Consultant Microbiologist to provide expert clinical microbiology services across our healthcare network. This specialist consultant position involves leading diagnostic microbiology services, infection control programs, and antimicrobial stewardship initiatives. You’ll work 18.5 hours per week at Midlands Regional Hospital, Tullamore, and 18.5 hours per week across HSE Dublin & Midlands facilities, serving the communities of Longford, Westmeath, Offaly, Laois, Kildare, and parts of Dublin South and Wicklow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead comprehensive clinical microbiology services including bacteriology, virology, mycology, and parasitology diagnostics
  • Provide expert consultation on infectious disease management and antimicrobial therapy optimization
  • Develop and implement robust infection prevention and control protocols across healthcare facilities
  • Supervise and mentor junior medical staff, biomedical scientists, and laboratory technicians in microbiology practices
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes in infectious disease management
  • Participate in antimicrobial stewardship programs and provide guidance on appropriate antimicrobial usage
  • Conduct clinical audit activities and contribute to quality improvement initiatives in laboratory medicine

Required Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • Full registration with the Medical Council of Ireland
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) in Medical Microbiology or equivalent qualification
  • Minimum 5 years post-fellowship experience in consultant-level microbiology practice
  • Specialist training and expertise in clinical microbiology, infection control, and antimicrobial stewardship
  • Current certification in infection prevention and control methodologies

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced training in molecular diagnostics and emerging infectious disease detection
  • Experience in healthcare-associated infection surveillance and outbreak investigation
  • Leadership experience in microbiology laboratory management and quality assurance
  • Research background with publications in peer-reviewed microbiology or infectious disease journals
  • Additional qualifications in public health or healthcare management
