About the Role

Join our dynamic laboratory team at Mayo University Hospital as a Medical Scientist specializing in Haematology, Blood Transfusion, and Biochemistry. You’ll play a crucial role in delivering high-quality diagnostic services, working within state-of-the-art laboratory facilities while contributing to patient care across the HSE West and North West region covering Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo, and Galway.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform complex laboratory analyses in Haematology, Blood Transfusion, and Biochemistry disciplines
  • Operate and maintain sophisticated laboratory instrumentation and automated analyzers
  • Ensure quality control procedures and compliance with laboratory accreditation standards
  • Interpret laboratory results and provide technical expertise to clinical staff
  • Participate in method validation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Maintain accurate documentation and laboratory information systems
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to optimize patient outcomes
  • Supervise and mentor junior laboratory staff and students
  • Contribute to laboratory research projects and professional development activities

Required Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Science, Biomedical Science, or related scientific discipline
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in clinical laboratory settings
  • Demonstrated expertise in Haematology, Blood Transfusion, and/or Biochemistry techniques
  • Registration with CORU (Health and Social Care Professionals Council) or eligibility for registration
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Proficiency in laboratory information systems and Microsoft Office applications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in Medical Science or related field
  • Previous experience in hospital laboratory environments
  • Knowledge of ISO 15189 laboratory quality management systems
  • Experience with automated laboratory analyzers and instrumentation
  • Research experience and publications in relevant scientific areas
