HSE Dublin and North East is seeking an experienced Consultant General Surgeon specializing in Gastrointestinal Surgery to join Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, County Louth. About the Role
We are looking for a skilled Consultant General Surgeon with expertise in Gastrointestinal Surgery to provide comprehensive surgical services at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda. You will lead a multidisciplinary team while delivering high-quality patient care in gastrointestinal surgical procedures. This consultant-level position reports directly to the Clinical Director and offers significant clinical autonomy within our established department.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage complex gastrointestinal surgical procedures including emergency and elective cases
- Provide clinical leadership and mentorship to junior medical staff and surgical trainees
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including gastroenterologists, oncologists, and nursing staff
- Participate in on-call rotas for emergency gastrointestinal surgical coverage
- Contribute to service development and quality improvement initiatives within the surgical department
- Engage in clinical governance activities including audit, research, and continuing medical education
- Provide consultation services for complex GI surgical cases across the hospital network
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Medical degree with full registration with the Medical Council of Ireland
- Specialist registration in General Surgery with sub-specialty training in Gastrointestinal Surgery
- Minimum 5 years post-specialty training experience in gastrointestinal surgical practice
- Fellowship training or equivalent experience in advanced GI surgical techniques
- Current certification in Advanced Life Support and surgical emergency management
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in minimally invasive and laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery techniques
- Research experience with publications in peer-reviewed surgical journals
- Teaching experience in medical education and surgical training programs
- Leadership experience in clinical settings or surgical departments
- Additional training in hepatobiliary or colorectal surgery subspecialties
