GP – Primary Care – Aran Islands | HSE

HSE West and North West is seeking two dedicated General Practitioners for our Primary Care service on Inis Mór, Aran Islands, County Galway. As a General Practitioner on Inis Mór, you’ll provide comprehensive primary healthcare to approximately 165 patients per practice while being part of a vital community service. You’ll deliver general medical services under the GMS Scheme in a setting that combines professional fulfillment with an unparalleled quality of life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive primary healthcare services to island residents across all age groups
  • Deliver general medical services under the General Medical Services Scheme
  • Manage patient consultations for acute and chronic conditions in a rural practice setting
  • Coordinate care with mainland specialists and secondary care services when required
  • Participate in emergency medical care as part of the island’s healthcare provision
  • Maintain accurate medical records and ensure compliance with HSE standards
  • Collaborate with local healthcare team including nurses and visiting specialists

Essential Qualifications

Education: Primary medical degree and full registration with the Medical Council of Ireland

Experience: Minimum 2 years post-qualification experience in general practice or equivalent primary care setting

Certifications:

  • Full registration with Medical Council of Ireland
  • Current indemnity insurance
  • Valid driving license (essential for island practice)

Skills:

  • Strong clinical decision-making in rural/remote settings
  • Excellent communication skills for diverse patient populations
  • Adaptability for island-based healthcare delivery
  • Emergency medicine capabilities preferred

Preferred Qualifications

Additional Experience:

  • Rural or remote practice experience
  • Emergency medicine training
  • Chronic disease management certification
  • Experience with telemedicine platforms

Specializations:

  • Annual allowance equivalent to 1.5 District Medical Officer’s salary
