About the Role
University Hospital Waterford is seeking a dedicated Senior House Officer in Emergency Medicine for our busy Emergency Department in Waterford. This fixed-term wholetime position offers exceptional training opportunities and the chance to develop advanced emergency care skills in Ireland’s leading healthcare system.
As a Senior House Officer in Emergency Medicine, you’ll provide acute care within our state-of-the-art Emergency Department. You’ll manage emergency presentations while working alongside experienced consultants and specialist teams. This role reports to the Emergency Medicine Consultant team and offers structured training progression.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead emergency assessments for acute medical and trauma presentations
- Manage critical patients requiring immediate intervention and stabilization
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including nursing, radiology, and specialist consultants
- Ensure compliance with HSE clinical guidelines and emergency protocols
- Develop clinical skills through supervised practice and formal training programs
- Participate in departmental audits and quality improvement initiatives
- Provide mentorship to junior medical staff and medical students
Essential Requirements
Education: Primary medical degree recognized by the Medical Council of Ireland
Experience: 2+ years in general medicine + 1+ years in emergency medicine
Registration: Full registration with the Medical Council of Ireland
Skills: Advanced life support certification, emergency procedures competency
Preferred Qualifications
- MRCS or equivalent emergency medicine qualification
- Experience with advanced procedures including intubation and central lines
- Trauma management experience in busy emergency departments
- Teaching experience with undergraduate medical students
