HSE Dublin South East is seeking a dedicated Senior House Officer for our Orthopaedic Surgery departments at Kilcreene Regional Orthopaedic Hospital Kilkenny and University Hospital Waterford. This fixed-term wholetime position offers exceptional surgical training opportunities and direct mentorship from leading orthopaedic consultants.
About the Role
As Senior House Officer in Orthopaedics, you’ll provide comprehensive patient care across two specialist orthopaedic units within our network. You’ll gain hands-on experience in trauma surgery, elective procedures, and emergency orthopaedics while working alongside experienced consultants and multidisciplinary teams. This role reports to the Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons and offers structured training progression.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead patient assessments and develop treatment plans for orthopaedic conditions across trauma and elective settings
- Assist in surgical procedures including joint replacements, fracture repairs, and arthroscopic interventions
- Manage emergency cases in trauma units and provide on-call orthopaedic coverage
- Collaborate with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and nursing teams for comprehensive patient care
- Participate in ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings for optimal patient outcomes
- Maintain accurate documentation and ensure compliance with clinical governance standards
- Engage in continuous learning through surgical training programs and consultant mentorship
Essential Qualifications
Education & Registration:
- Medical degree from recognized institution
- Full registration with Irish Medical Council (IMC)
- Current NCHD training contract eligibility
Experience & Skills:
- Minimum 2 years post-graduation medical experience
- Previous surgical rotation experience preferred
- Strong clinical decision-making abilities
- Excellent communication skills for patient and family interactions
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous orthopaedic or trauma surgery experience
- ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) certification
- Experience with electronic medical records systems
- Interest in pursuing orthopaedic specialty training
- Research experience in musculoskeletal medicine
