About the Role
Join our specialized Microbiology team at Mayo University Hospital as a Medical Scientist Senior, where you’ll play a crucial role in diagnostic microbiology services. This senior position involves leading complex microbiological analysis, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to infection control protocols across the hospital network.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise complex microbiological testing including bacteriology, virology, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing
- Provide expert interpretation of microbiological results and clinical consultation to medical teams
- Mentor and train junior medical scientists and laboratory technicians in specialized microbiology techniques
- Maintain quality assurance standards and compliance with ISO 15189 accreditation requirements
- Participate in infection prevention and control activities including outbreak investigation
- Collaborate with clinical teams on antimicrobial stewardship programs
- Contribute to research projects and continuing professional development initiatives
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Science, Microbiology, or related field with relevant professional qualification
- Minimum 5 years experience in clinical microbiology laboratory setting
- Registration with CORU (Health and Social Care Professionals Council)
- Demonstrated expertise in diagnostic microbiology including bacterial identification and antimicrobial testing
- Strong knowledge of infection control principles and laboratory safety protocols
- Excellent communication skills for clinical consultation and team collaboration
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Medical Microbiology or related field
- Experience with molecular diagnostic techniques and automation systems
- Previous supervisory or mentoring experience in laboratory settings
- Knowledge of healthcare quality management systems
- Experience in antimicrobial resistance surveillance programs
