Senior Dietitian – Upper GI Surgery – Dublin | HSE Connolly Hospital

The Health Service Executive (HSE) is Ireland’s national healthcare provider, delivering comprehensive health and social care services across the country. We are seeking an experienced Senior Dietitian specializing in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery to join our expert clinical team at Connolly Hospital in Dublin North.

About the Role

This senior clinical dietitian position focuses specifically on upper GI surgical nutrition, working within our specialized Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery unit. You’ll provide expert nutritional assessment, intervention, and ongoing care for patients undergoing complex upper GI procedures, working collaboratively with our multidisciplinary surgical team to optimize patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized nutritional assessment and intervention for patients undergoing upper GI surgical procedures including esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, and hepatic surgeries
  • Develop and implement comprehensive nutrition care plans for pre-operative optimization, post-operative recovery, and long-term dietary management
  • Conduct clinical nutrition consultations for complex upper GI cases, including bariatric surgery, gastrointestinal oncology, and inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Lead nutritional education programs for patients and families regarding post-surgical dietary modifications and lifestyle changes
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team including surgeons, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure integrated patient care
  • Supervise and mentor junior dietitians and students in upper GI surgical nutrition practices
  • Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives to enhance nutritional care standards within the department

Required Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics or equivalent qualification recognized by CORU
  • CORU registration as a Dietitian with current practicing certificate
  • Minimum 3-5 years post-qualification experience in clinical dietetics, with substantial experience in surgical nutrition
  • Specialized knowledge and experience in upper GI surgery nutrition including enteral and parenteral nutrition support
  • Strong clinical assessment skills and ability to work with complex medical conditions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in Clinical Nutrition or related specialty area
  • Experience in bariatric surgery nutrition and long-term dietary management
  • Expertise in gastrointestinal oncology nutrition and supporting patients through cancer treatment
  • Experience with nutrition support teams and parenteral nutrition protocols
  • Research experience in surgical nutrition or related clinical areas
