We are seeking a dedicated Staff Nurse to join our specialized intellectual disability team in Galway City, working in a permanent wholetime capacity to deliver person-centered care and support.
About the Role
This Staff Nurse position focuses specifically on providing specialized nursing care within our intellectual disability services in Galway. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, individualized care while promoting independence, dignity, and quality of life for service users with diverse intellectual disability needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver specialized nursing care to adults with intellectual disabilities, including medication administration, health monitoring, and clinical assessments tailored to individual needs
- Develop and implement person-centered care plans in collaboration with service users, families, and multidisciplinary team members including social workers, occupational therapists, and support staff
- Conduct comprehensive health assessments and ongoing monitoring of service users’ physical and mental health, identifying changes in condition and responding appropriately
- Provide clinical leadership and guidance to healthcare assistants and support workers, ensuring best practice standards in intellectual disability nursing care
- Coordinate healthcare appointments and liaise with GPs, consultants, and other healthcare professionals to ensure continuity of care for service users
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and care records in accordance with NMBI guidelines and organizational policies, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements
- Support service user advocacy and rights-based approaches, promoting choice, consent, and participation in all aspects of care and daily living activities
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Registration with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) as a Registered Intellectual Disability Nurse or Staff Nurse
- Minimum 2 years post-qualification experience in intellectual disability nursing or related healthcare setting
- Strong clinical assessment skills with knowledge of health conditions commonly associated with intellectual disabilities
- Understanding of person-centered care principles and rights-based approaches in disability services
- Excellent communication skills with ability to adapt communication methods for diverse service user needs
Preferred Qualifications
- Specialized training in areas such as epilepsy management, mental health, or behavior support
- Experience working with adults with complex intellectual disability and additional support needs
- Knowledge of HIQA standards and regulatory frameworks for disability services
- Post-registration qualifications in intellectual disability, mental health, or related specializations
