The Health Service Executive (HSE) West and North West is Ireland’s national healthcare provider, delivering comprehensive healthcare services across Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo, and Galway. We are currently seeking a dedicated Staff Nurse specializing in Palliative Care to join our compassionate team at the North West Hospice inpatient unit in Sligo. This permanent wholetime position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in end-of-life care.
About the Role
This specialized nursing position focuses on providing exceptional palliative care within the North West Hospice’s inpatient unit in Sligo. As a Staff Nurse in our Palliative Care unit, you will deliver compassionate, patient-centered care to individuals and families during life’s most challenging moments. You’ll work as part of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to enhancing quality of life and providing comfort, dignity, and support to patients with life-limiting illnesses.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive palliative nursing care to patients with life-limiting conditions within the hospice inpatient unit
- Conduct thorough patient assessments and develop individualized care plans focused on comfort and quality of life
- Administer medications and treatments specific to palliative care protocols, including pain and symptom management
- Support patients and families through difficult conversations and emotional challenges with empathy and professionalism
- Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary team members including doctors, social workers, chaplains, and therapists
- Maintain accurate and detailed nursing documentation in accordance with HSE standards and hospice protocols
- Participate in family conferences and care planning meetings to ensure holistic, patient-centered approaches
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)
- Demonstrated depth and breadth of experience in general nursing care relevant to healthcare delivery
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills applicable to palliative care settings
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with patients, families, and healthcare teams
- Commitment to providing compassionate, dignified care to patients and families during end-of-life journey
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working in palliative care, hospice, or end-of-life care settings (desirable but not essential)
- Additional training or certification in palliative care, pain management, or symptom control
- Experience working within HSE healthcare system or similar public healthcare environment
- Knowledge of bereavement support and family-centered care approaches
