HSE West and North West is seeking a dedicated Orthopaedic Senior House Officer to join our dynamic Orthopedics Department at Mayo University Hospital. About the Role

Join our specialist orthopedic team at Mayo University Hospital as a Senior House Officer, where you’ll gain valuable experience in orthopedic surgery and trauma care. This position provides comprehensive training opportunities in a busy regional hospital setting, working alongside experienced consultants and multidisciplinary teams to deliver exceptional patient care in orthopedic medicine.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive orthopedic care for patients including pre-operative assessment, surgical assistance, and post-operative management
  • Participate in emergency on-call rotas covering orthopedic trauma and urgent surgical cases
  • Conduct clinical assessments, develop treatment plans, and manage patient care under consultant supervision
  • Assist in orthopedic surgical procedures including trauma surgery, joint replacements, and elective operations
  • Maintain accurate medical records and documentation in compliance with HSE standards and protocols
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and nursing staff
  • Participate in clinical audit activities, quality improvement initiatives, and continuing medical education programs

Required Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • Active Irish Medical Council (IMC) registration – applications without active IMC will not be accepted
  • Minimum 2 years post-internship experience specifically in orthopedics specialty (non-negotiable requirement)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Valid OET/IELTS examination results where applicable for international medical graduates
  • Full eligibility to work in Ireland

Preferred Qualifications

  • Irish, UK, or EU healthcare system experience highly desirable for this position
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification
  • Experience in orthopedic subspecialties such as trauma surgery or joint replacement
  • Research experience or publications in orthopedic medicine
