The Health Service Executive (HSE), Ireland’s national healthcare provider, is seeking an experienced Consultant Physician in Geriatric Medicine for a permanent wholetime position across two prestigious healthcare facilities in Waterford. This specialist role offers 18.5 hours per week at University Hospital Waterford and 18.5 hours per week at Kilcreene Orthopaedic Hospital, providing comprehensive geriatric medical care to the community.

About the Role

This Consultant position in Geriatric Medicine represents an excellent opportunity to lead specialized care for elderly patients across acute and rehabilitation settings in Waterford. You will provide expert clinical leadership in geriatric medicine, working collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care for older adults with complex medical needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Leadership: Provide expert clinical care and treatment for elderly patients with complex medical conditions across both hospital sites
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Lead and coordinate care with nursing staff, allied health professionals, and other medical specialists to ensure comprehensive patient management
  • Quality Improvement: Develop and implement evidence-based protocols and pathways to enhance geriatric care delivery and patient outcomes
  • Education and Training: Supervise and mentor junior medical staff, participate in continuing medical education programs, and contribute to teaching activities
  • Service Development: Contribute to the strategic development of geriatric medicine services across the HSE Dublin and South East region
  • Patient Advocacy: Champion age-appropriate care approaches and ensure dignity and respect in all patient interactions
  • Research and Innovation: Engage in clinical research activities and quality improvement initiatives to advance geriatric medicine practice

Required Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • Medical Qualifications: Primary medical degree and full registration with the Irish Medical Council
  • Specialist Training: Completion of specialist training in Geriatric Medicine or equivalent international qualification
  • Clinical Experience: Minimum 5 years post-qualification experience in geriatric medicine or related medical specialties
  • Professional Registration: Current registration and good standing with relevant professional medical bodies
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with elderly patients and their families

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Qualifications: Additional postgraduate qualifications in geriatric medicine, internal medicine, or related specialties
  • Leadership Experience: Previous experience in clinical leadership roles or service management
  • Research Background: Experience in clinical research, quality improvement projects, or academic publications
  • Multidisciplinary Experience: Proven track record of working effectively in multidisciplinary healthcare teams
  • Quality Improvement: Experience with clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement methodologies
