HSE West and North West is seeking an experienced nursing professional to join Galway University Hospitals as Assistant Director of Nursing specializing in Cancer Services. This is a permanent wholetime position offering the opportunity to lead and develop cancer care nursing services in one of Ireland’s premier healthcare facilities.
About the Role
As Assistant Director of Nursing for Cancer Services, you will provide strategic leadership and operational management within our specialized oncology units. This senior nursing management role requires expertise in acute healthcare settings with particular focus on cancer care delivery, ensuring high-quality patient outcomes and service excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead nursing operations across cancer services units, ensuring delivery of evidence-based, patient-centered care
- Manage and develop nursing staff within oncology specialties, providing clinical leadership and professional guidance
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including oncologists, radiation therapists, and allied health professionals
- Implement quality improvement initiatives specific to cancer care protocols and patient safety standards
- Oversee resource allocation and budget management for nursing services within cancer care departments
- Ensure compliance with HSE policies, accreditation standards, and oncology-specific clinical guidelines
- Drive service development and strategic planning for cancer nursing services expansion and enhancement
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or equivalent professional qualification
- Current registration with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)
- Minimum 5+ years management experience in acute healthcare setting with cancer services focus
- Demonstrated expertise in oncology nursing, cancer care pathways, and specialized treatment modalities
- Strong leadership skills with proven ability to manage multidisciplinary teams in complex clinical environments
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Management, or related field
- Additional oncology certifications or specialized cancer care qualifications
- Experience with HSE systems, policies, and governance structures
- Quality improvement and project management experience in healthcare settings
