About the Role – Haematology Laboratory
Join the Haematology service at St Columcille’s Hospital, providing high-quality diagnostic testing to support inpatient, outpatient and emergency care. As a Senior Medical Scientist (Haematology), you’ll take technical and supervisory responsibility across core and specialist areas such as full blood counts, coagulation, blood film morphology, haemoglobinopathies, and analyser validation, ensuring turnaround times and quality standards that directly impact patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day operations across Haematology benches, including staff allocation and workflow management.
- Oversee IQC/EQA, analyser maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting; escalate/liaise with vendors as required.
- Validate and authorise results, perform morphology review, and communicate critical results per policy.
- Contribute to ISO 15189 quality management: SOPs, non-conformances, audits, risk assessments, and document control.
- Support method verification/validation, POCT oversight (where applicable), and service improvement projects.
- Train, mentor, and assess staff and students; support CPD and competency assessments.
- Participate in the on-call/extended hours roster in line with service needs.
Required Qualifications
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree (or recognised equivalent) in Biomedical Science/Medical Science with Haematology as a major component.
- CORU registration (or eligibility) as a Medical Scientist.
- Significant post-qualification experience in diagnostic haematology within an accredited clinical laboratory.
- Demonstrable competence in IQC/EQA, analyser maintenance, and morphology.
- Strong IT/LIS skills and knowledge of ISO 15189 requirements.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
Preferred
- Postgraduate qualification in Haematology or Laboratory Management.
- Experience with coagulation platforms and validation projects.
- Experience contributing to accreditation inspections and Q-Pulse (or similar) document control systems.
