Join Naas General Hospital, part of the HSE Dublin and Midlands Health Region, as a Senior Medical Scientist (Quality). This permanent part-time position offers the opportunity to play a leading role in maintaining and enhancing laboratory quality systems within one of Ireland’s key regional hospitals.

About the Role

As a Senior Medical Scientist in Quality, you’ll be responsible for ensuring that laboratory testing and diagnostic procedures meet the highest standards of accuracy, compliance, and patient safety. Based in Naas General Hospital, this role involves working closely with a multidisciplinary laboratory team, implementing and monitoring quality management systems in line with HSE and ISO 15189 standards.

The successful candidate will demonstrate depth and breadth of knowledge in Quality Management Systems (QMS) and laboratory best practices, supporting continuous improvement initiatives across pathology disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, develop, and monitor the laboratory’s Quality Management System.
  • Coordinate internal and external quality audits, including ISO 15189 accreditation processes.
  • Ensure compliance with HSE laboratory governance, safety, and documentation standards.
  • Train and mentor laboratory staff on QMS policies and quality improvement methods.
  • Manage non-conformance reports, root cause analyses, and corrective actions.
  • Liaise with external auditors, suppliers, and accreditation bodies.
  • Contribute to strategic planning for laboratory quality and patient diagnostic services.

Required Qualifications

Essential

  • Hold a recognised Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Medical Science, or an equivalent qualification approved by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM).
  • Be registered (or eligible for registration) with CORU as a Medical Scientist.
  • A minimum of five years post-qualification experience, with demonstrable expertise in Quality Management.
  • Proven ability to manage laboratory audits and maintain ISO 15189 accreditation.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and analytical skills.

Desirable

  • A postgraduate qualification in Quality Management, Healthcare Leadership, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Experience with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management Systems) and digital quality tools.
  • Prior experience in a hospital pathology laboratory environment.
