The Health Service Executive (HSE) is seeking an experienced and motivated Medical Scientist (Staff Grade) to join the Haematology and Blood Transfusion Department at Sligo University Hospital. This is a Specified Purpose Wholetime position within the HSE West and North West region, offering the opportunity to contribute to a dynamic and professional healthcare team dedicated to delivering high-quality laboratory services to patients in Sligo and surrounding counties.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will play a key role in supporting diagnostic services that underpin patient care across multiple clinical specialties. Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and specialist laboratory testing in Haematology and Blood Transfusion, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of results.
- Participate in the validation, verification, and maintenance of analytical instruments and methodologies.
- Adhere to ISO 15189 accreditation standards and laboratory quality management systems.
- Maintain and monitor quality control and assurance procedures, ensuring compliance with national standards and HSE policies.
- Assist in the implementation of new laboratory technologies, processes, and information systems.
- Participate in continuing professional development (CPD) and contribute to the training and supervision of laboratory staff and students.
- Ensure the confidentiality and integrity of all patient and test data.
- Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, supporting the overall aims and objectives of Sligo University Hospital.
Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for this post, candidates must meet the following essential criteria:
- Hold a recognised Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Medical Science or equivalent qualification approved by the HSE and CORU.
- Be CORU-registered (Medical Scientists Registration Board) or eligible for registration at the time of appointment.
- Have experience in laboratory Haematology and/or Blood Transfusion (essential).
- Demonstrate strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical skills.
- Possess excellent interpersonal and communication abilities with a commitment to teamwork and service quality.
Desirable attributes include:
- Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
- Knowledge of quality management standards (ISO 15189).
- Flexibility and adaptability within a fast-paced healthcare environment.
