Medical Scientist – Haematology/Blood Transfusion (Staff Grade) – Sligo University Hospital

The Health Service Executive (HSE) is seeking an experienced and motivated Medical Scientist (Staff Grade) to join the Haematology and Blood Transfusion Department at Sligo University Hospital. This is a Specified Purpose Wholetime position within the HSE West and North West region, offering the opportunity to contribute to a dynamic and professional healthcare team dedicated to delivering high-quality laboratory services to patients in Sligo and surrounding counties.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will play a key role in supporting diagnostic services that underpin patient care across multiple clinical specialties. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and specialist laboratory testing in Haematology and Blood Transfusion, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of results.
  • Participate in the validation, verification, and maintenance of analytical instruments and methodologies.
  • Adhere to ISO 15189 accreditation standards and laboratory quality management systems.
  • Maintain and monitor quality control and assurance procedures, ensuring compliance with national standards and HSE policies.
  • Assist in the implementation of new laboratory technologies, processes, and information systems.
  • Participate in continuing professional development (CPD) and contribute to the training and supervision of laboratory staff and students.
  • Ensure the confidentiality and integrity of all patient and test data.
  • Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, supporting the overall aims and objectives of Sligo University Hospital.

Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this post, candidates must meet the following essential criteria:

  • Hold a recognised Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Medical Science or equivalent qualification approved by the HSE and CORU.
  • Be CORU-registered (Medical Scientists Registration Board) or eligible for registration at the time of appointment.
  • Have experience in laboratory Haematology and/or Blood Transfusion (essential).
  • Demonstrate strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical skills.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication abilities with a commitment to teamwork and service quality.

Desirable attributes include:

  • Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
  • Knowledge of quality management standards (ISO 15189).
  • Flexibility and adaptability within a fast-paced healthcare environment.
